This week’s Pause is written by Krista:

Dear Friends,

I keep having variations on the same conversation with friends and strangers and colleagues. How extraordinary it feels, for those of us in places of the world that are opening up, to do ordinary things like hug people and walk unmasked into common spaces and even just be at the office. Yet: how strangely, puzzlingly unnerving it all also can feel.

We are, on many levels, in a new chapter — following on the multiple chapters of the past 18 months. This is a time of transition. It’s a liminal space emotionally, psychologically, physically, institutionally, relationally.

Part of what we need to do now is rest, as we are able. To let ourselves fall apart, perhaps. Throughout the pandemic, it’s been hard to fully articulate what was happening inside us and how that was ricocheting between us. Now, we are in a new moment, called to feel what we need to feel, to find words and new intelligence of practice in all the spaces we inhabit and work in and relate in. To acknowledge what we’ve survived, what we’ve lost, what we’ve begun to learn.

We’re also called to really internalize — and this is challenging for many of us, I speak for myself — that this matter of being alive now, of rising to what we’ve begun to learn in an extraordinary time in the life of the world, is not something we’re supposed to know how to do or to take up alone.

This has been our deepest motivation for creating the Wisdom app and the Hope Is a Muscle course as a place to begin. And here I have buried my lead, as the saying goes in journalism. For as I write, the app is LIVE. I don’t use exclamation points lightly, but here goes: !!!!!!!! This, here, now, is the first public announcement. The app has been nine intense months in the making and that feels apt: it has felt like an experience of gestation and birth.

A brief word about On Being this week, too. I first interviewed the brilliant physicist Brian Greene a few years ago, as some of you will remember. This is a new conversation with him and a remarkable view inside an evolution he’s undergone in recent years, one that might surprise you. It’s full of wonder and a cosmic perspective and energy for framing this time. It’s full of delight — and we can never have too much of that — one of the companions to hope that we explore in the Hope Is a Muscle course.

I truly, deeply *hope* you’ll join me there. If you do, please let me know what you think. There are details below on how to get started, and what awaits — including a launch event on July 27. All are so very warmly welcome. It would be wonderful to see you there.

With love,

Krista

Here are more details on the foundational first course, Hope Is a Muscle

Across 20 sessions centered around a compilation of 10-15 minute Wisdom Practices, we delve into how hope actually functions as a daily calling, as a moral choice, as social creativity. We learn about ways to progressively deepen our presence to ourselves, to others, to the world — life practices that are companions to a robust hope. We meet people who embody hope with their very being. We have our minds opened wide by scientists on frontiers of cosmic discovery and evolutionary biology, where light is being shed on the truth of how Bryan Stevenson defines hope: as a “superpower” of our species. He is the first teacher we walk with, followed by:

Maria Popova/Devendra Banhart/Rev. angel Kyodo williams/Naomi Shihab Nye/Ocean Vuong/Jacqueline Novogratz/Ross Gay/Ai-jen Poo/Rabbi Ariel Burger/Mario Livio/Augustín Fuentes/Rebecca Solnit/Vincent Harding/Jane Goodall/Joy Harjo/Joanna Macy/Br. David Steindl-Rast/Jericho Brown

These are lives of applied hope

And we can all be more like that.

and Wisdom App Launch

Tuesday, July 27th, 2021
5pm PST / 7pm CST / 8pm EST

Hope is calling us — to meet what is hard and hurting, to rise to what is beautiful and life-giving, to begin where we live and alongside others — to the long work of remaking the world.

We invite you to step toward this and join us for Practicing Hope. This online event will mirror the experience of the app — Wisdom Practice, guided reflection, and more tools for the art of living that draw on Krista’s conversations with wise teachers across the years. All are welcome. A few notes as you prepare:

  • Advance registration is required to receive the link to join this Zoom webinar.
  • Those who’ve registered will receive an email on the day of the event with a link to join.
  • Attendance is free.
